English Grammar Series

This is Session 1 of 6 in the full-year English Grammar Series.

This class series is intended for primary and middle school levels.

It is recommended, but not required, that you take the classes in this series in order.

Each course in this series focuses on one aspect of English grammar, including topics like the parts of speech, conjugating, types of phrases, parts and types of sentences, and sentence structure.

CLASS DESCRIPTION

This 2-week class focuses on two parts of speech: NOUNS and PRONOUNS.

Understanding the parts of speech helps us to understand word functions, their meanings, and their purpose within a whole sentence. Nouns and pronouns are the names by which we call people, places, and things! So it is important to understand the different types of nouns and pronouns, as well as their proper use within a sentence.

CLASS FORMAT

No live classes—view lessons on YOUR schedule. In general, expect 1.5-2.5 hours to work through the lesson plan each week, and an additional 2-5 hours working on assignments (it really depends what assignment your child chooses to do and how they manage their time). For classes with two levels, the material is the same for both—the depth of the assignments differs. Younger students should usually be placed in Level 1. Older students, or younger students who want more of a challenge, should be placed in Level 2.

Each lesson consists of a fully narrated PowerPoint presentation with images and videos to enhance the topics. Students will have access to our learning management system, Canvas, for viewing their lesson, printing worksheets, taking quizzes, viewing/submitting assignments, participating in discussions, and viewing grades/feedback.

CLASS DESCRIPTION

This 2-week class focuses on the different ARTICLES, PUNCTUATION, and the part of speech: INTERJECTIONS.

Understanding parts of speech and phrase structures helps in understanding word functions, their meanings, and their function within a whole sentence. Understanding the different types of punctuation we can use to form sentence parts and whole sentences helps us to better format our communication.

CLASS DESCRIPTION

This 6-week class focuses on one part of speech: VERBS.

Understanding parts of speech helps in understanding word functions, their meanings, and their function within a whole sentence. Verbs are the action words that we use to describe what a person, place, or thing is doing! So it is important to understand the different types of verbs, as well as their proper use within a sentence. That is why this course also goes into depth on the 12 tenses that verbs can be conjugated into.

The class is composed of 6 lessons. Weeks 1 and 2 cover the types of verbs, while weeks 3-6 cover verb tenses and conjugation.

This 6-week class focuses on sentences as a whole. Understanding the types of sentences and how to form them helps to better understand the parts of speech and their function within a whole sentence. This course goes into depth on the various types of sentences, how sentences can be put together, and the various parts that can make up whole sentences.

The subject and predicate of sentences, and the subject with the various types of objects that can be used in a sentence.

Week 2:

Various types of phrases, clauses, and modifiers that can be used in a sentence.

Week 3:

The different ways sentences can be put together: simple, compound, complex, and run-on sentences.

Week 4:

Active and passive voice.

Week 5:

The different types of whole sentences: declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory sentences.

Week 6:

Students will learn how to put all of this information from the class together as they learn how to diagram sentences!
